Ahhh, autumn!

sunset in Encinitas, palm trees

The summer was one for the record books - can't help but wonder if the winter will follow suit. Heat, humidity, warm ocean waters have forced all of us to reconsider what we grow. But more than any other factor, the drought makes us choose what we truly value. Please don't overlook the fact that all water restrictions throughout our area make exceptions for the watering of trees. Why? Because trees are "green infrastructure investments and long-lived" according to certified arborist Robin Rivet. They capture rainfall in their canopies and slow down runoff while improving the soil's ability to intake water. They help control erosion and aid in recharging our groundwater. What's not to love? Bottom line: Despite the Stage 4 drought, don't let your trees die. In fact, autumn is the best time to plant new trees and new trees will ultimately improve out water situation by capturing rainfall as described above.
