Planting Trees when there's a Drought

It's easy to get swept up in the panic of water-rationing and drastic measures here in southern California. With the Sierra snow pack at 5% of normal levels, we all have to find ways to cut back. Does that mean we should not plant "thirsty" trees?

To the contrary. The benefit of trees far outweighs their water requirements. And few people realize that an established tree can manage with just 15 gallons of water per week. Rather than not planting, consider smarter planting, such as deciduous trees on the west side of the house where it provides cooling shade in summer and lets the sun shine in during the winter. Trees generally are an improvement and certainly add to a property's value, sometimes many thousands of dollars worth.
